Happy New Year! Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe in 2022! January is the month of the garnet, a stone often confused with the ruby, but is unique in the bright red undertones and its fiery spirit.
Garnet is the first birthstone of each year, and is also the oldest as it was the first gem to be a birthstone. It symbolises passion and strength, but also revitalisation and the balance of life. The stone is also a talisman of protection, believed to change in colour to warn the wearer of impending danger.
The name of the blood-like stone originates from the old English word for garnet, but is also closely linked to another bright red item- a pomegranate. Used for jewellery since the Bronze Age, the already-rare garnet is predominantly bright red, but can also be blue, known as a blue garnet. Blue Garnets are one of the rarest gems, only discovered in the late 1990s. Garnets are perfect who love and thrive passionately, bringing out the intensity in a person through the bright red of the stone.
