Over the last couple of months I was fortunate to make matching spider-themed engagement rings for one of my favourite couples, Mel and Geordie.
It was a lovely surprise when Geordie reached out to me, wanting to propose. He had no idea what he wanted as an engagement ring, but all he knew were two things:
It needed to be an emerald, her favourite stone, and coincidentally his birthstone;
An alternate engagement ring, as she liked some of my previous custom work and wanted something he liked alternate engagement rings and wanted something unconventional.
We met at a pub (seems like a pattern now!) to discuss more details, and I came up with a few designs that he liked, but didn’t seem right.
What ended up catching his eye was my Spider Web Ring that I was wearing. “We love that ring! Mel’s been eyeing it for a while!,” he exclaimed, and that became the base of her custom engagement ring. He also loved the idea that it was a hexagon, something that meant a lot to the couple. I asked him for a ring size and he ended up having to measure it with a piece of string when she was asleep!
I then selected several emeralds from my amazing gem stone dealer, with a clear favourite: a lush rose-cut emerald with a deep, viridescent colour that created a glowing light. The hypnotising emerald was set with six claws in the heavier set ring based on the original Spider Web design in 14k White Gold.
Mel reached out afterwards and surprised Geordie with his own matching ring, and while brainstorming I mentioned making a spider ring, since you can’t have a web without a spider. She loved the idea, and we started brainstorming several versions of the ring, landing on a two gem spider ring where the legs connected in the back. I sent her images of quite a few gems before we landed on two vibrant, crimson natural rubies, which was her birthstone. Like Geordie, Mel also had to measure the ring size when he was asleep! The final product was a 14k White Gold spider ring, complete with two bezel set rubies that made up the body of the Spider.
Congrats Mel and Geordie and thank you for entrusting me with making these alternative engagement rings for you!
