A pearl is unlike any other gem we work with: not dug from the ground, but grown, slowly, inside a living oyster. Layer upon layer of nacre builds around a single grain until a pearl emerges — no cutting, no polishing, luminous just as nature made it.
Australia's South Sea pearls, grown by the great silver-lipped oyster along the pristine Kimberley coast near Broome, are among the most prized in the world — the largest cultured pearls, with thick nacre and a deep, satiny lustre. They're a small fraction of the world's pearl supply, which is part of what makes them so special.
Pearl oysters are filter-feeders — they can only thrive in clean, unpolluted water, and the quality of a pearl depends directly on the health of the sea around it. That makes pearl farming one of the few forms of gem-getting that relies on protecting its environment, not exploiting it. Australia's wild pearl-oyster fishery is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.
We set our pearls by hand into solid Australian metals — never plated — so the setting is as considered as the gem. A pearl carries a soft, quiet light that suits being worn often and worn simply; ours are made to become the piece you reach for without thinking.
Pearls are soft and organic, so they ask for a little care: keep them away from perfume, hairspray and cosmetics — last on when you dress, first off when you undress. Wipe them with a soft, damp cloth after wearing, and store them apart from harder jewellery. Looked after, a pearl only grows lovelier with a lifetime of wear.
