ASHES INTO JEWELLERY

Yes, we can do this. Here's exactly what happens.

We seal a small amount of cremation ashes into a piece of our jewellery. The piece is solid 9ct gold or sterling silver all the way through, never plated, and it's made to order by hand in our studio in Stanmore, Sydney. Solid metal doesn't wear out, so this is a piece to be handed on rather than replaced. We need about a teaspoon of ashes — whatever we don't use comes back to you with the finished piece.

One teaspoon of ashes. Two to three weeks.

Order the piece and choose your metal and size. Put about a teaspoon of ashes in a ziplock bag or a small airtight container and post it to us: Serpent & the Swan, Studio 14, 43-53 Bridge Road, Stanmore NSW 2048.

We set the ashes into the piece and seal them in by hand. Most pieces are finished two to three weeks after your ashes arrive. Rings with a stone-set heart take four to six weeks. The ashes we don't use are returned with your order.

Rings and necklaces, in silver or gold.

Signet rings, heart rings, shooting-star pendants and heart pendants, each with a setting that holds the ashes. Leave the setting clear so the ashes show, or choose a colour of enamel behind them.

Every ring is made in your size. Every necklace comes on a 45cm chain. Each piece arrives in a heart-shaped tin. Sterling silver, or solid 9ct yellow, rose or white gold.

Every piece in the Serpent & the Swan collection is devotedly handmade in my studio in Sydney.

My philosophy lies within circular consumption, ethically sourced solid and natural materials I work with. Making bespoke heirloom pieces to be worn everyday, to stand the test of time, to be loved.

Made to be kept, not replaced.

Plated jewellery is base metal under a skin of gold a few microns thick. It wears through. Ours is solid 9ct gold or sterling silver from surface to core, so there's nothing to wear off. The piece can be polished, repaired and resized for generations — the same piece, still being worn long after all of us.

Our gold is 100% Australian, refined in Sydney by Palloys, and alloyed with copper, silver and zinc. No nickel. Our silver is sterling: 92.5% silver. Both are what we work in every day. You only make a piece like this once — so it's made to still be here when your grandchildren are the ones wearing it.
